  • ‘EFCC To Arraign Ex-Kwara Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed On Friday’Published 1 hour ago on 22 February 2024 #news

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign a former governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed, before a Federal High Court on Friday. learnt the EFCC is set to arraign Ahmed who has been in custody since Monday over alleged N10bn fraud. “He is going to be arraigned on Friday at the Federal High Court in Ilorin for diversion of funds, amounting to N10bn,” a source told Punch. It would be recalled that the immediate past Kwara Governor on Monday, honoured an invitation for interrogation with the EFCC on Monday. His Chief Press Secretary, AbdulWahab Oba, confirmed his principal’s visit to the EFCC office on Monday, but said that it was only “procedural and routine”. “Dr Ahmed’s visit to the EFCC is procedural and routine. He was invited and he honoured them as he’s always done. He’s always ready to respond to any query or question regarding his tenure as a governor of the state.” However, later on Tuesday night, he accused the EFCC of shifting the goalpost by giving stringent bail conditions in order to keep Ahmed in its custody. “Yes, he is still with the EFCC and we are now in a dilemma over the issue because they keep changing the goalpost during the match. The case is taking a new dimension, which we don’t really understand for now. “Initially they said they wanted him to produce two sureties who are federal directors. The sureties came and were asked to provide landed properties in Abuja. We see this as a contradiction. The case was initially handled by the EFCC office in Abuja before it was transferred to Ilorin over the issue of jurisdiction. Additionally, he has been denied access to his doctors, medication and direct access to his cook,” Oba said. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, some supporters of the Governor stormed the EFCC office in Ilorin, demanding the immediate release of the ex-Governor or in the alternative, that the anti-graft agency should charge him to court.

Sky reports that Tuchel will leave Bayern after both sides had “fair and positive discussions” and came to an agreement. The club has also confirmed the development in a statement released on its website on Wednesday. According to the statement, the working relationship, initially set to run until June 30, 2025, will end on June 30, 2024, after a constructive discussion between CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and Thomas Tuchel. CEO Dreesen confirmed that Tuchel will be stepping down in the official statement, which read: “In an open, good conversation, we came to the decision to mutually end our collaboration in the summer. Our goal is to carry out a sporting realignment with a new coach for the 2024/25 season. “Until then, every individual in the club is expressly challenged to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga. I also explicitly hold the team responsible. “Especially in the Champions League, we are convinced that after the 0-1 defeat in the first leg at Lazio Rome, we will advance to the quarterfinals in the second leg in our fully occupied Allianz Arena with our fans behind us.” Tuchel also agreed that they “will end our collaboration after this season. Until then, I and my coaching team will of course continue to do everything we can to ensure maximum success,” the statement read. In March 2023, Tuchel took over as the new head coach of FC Bayern, replacing Julian Nagelsmann. He won the Bundesliga with the team shortly after. Tuchel’s contract is to be terminated one year ahead of schedule following a series of Bundesliga losses to Leverkusen and Bochum. The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager has struggled to find the right balance in the squad, and results have deteriorated this season, with Bayern trailing Leverkusen by eight points after 22 games. Bayern exited the DFB-Pokal at the second round stage and have a tough task ahead in the Champions League quarterfinals after a loss in the first leg against Lazio. The Bundesliga champions have also reportedly started a search for a new coach, with Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp among the top contenders.

  • Developers reject N8,000 cement price21st February 2024

Developers in the built industry have rejected the agreement reached between the Federal Government and cement manufacturers. At the meeting, it was resolved that prices of cement will be reduced to betweenN7,000 and N8,000. In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, the President of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria, Dr. Aliyu Wamakko, said the reduction was not good for the economy. He said, “I do not think that is good for the economy of this country because cement constitutes the primary product for any building construction to be done. “The Chief Executive Officer of BUA Cement, Abdul Samad Rabiu, promised Nigerians that by January 1, 2024, the cement price would be slashed to N3,500, so what is the problem.” According to him, most of the components of cement are sourced locally. “Why should the price be reduced to N8,000? Anything above N5,000 is not beneficial for the economy and it would not bring any positive impact towards the reduction in the 28 million housing deficit,” he added. Wamakko noted that the price should be brought down to N5,000 for any meaningful thing to be done. He added, “At N8,000, most of the building projects in the country would be uncompleted. There must be a review of abandoned buildings all over the country, most especially the ones in 2023. “90 per cent of cement is sourced locally, so I do not understand why the cement should go up to that price.” In a similar vein, the Executive Secretary, Association of Housing Corporation in Nigeria, Toye Eniola, condemned the negotiation. He said, “What is fair in N7,000 to N8,000, when BUA promised us a slash from over N5,500 to N3,500 and now they are negotiating N8,000? Where are we heading to? “That negotiation is for the rich. What they are saying is with that price, housing is going not to be for the poor. With that price, there is no poor man that would be able to afford it and it would keep widening the deficit gap. “The way forward is to go back to the basics, this is the time to embrace local building materials, for instance, we have interlocking blocks and we require about 5 per cent of cement for this which would save us a lot of money.

  • Kano unseals 10 warehouses accused of hoarding foodstuffs

The Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission said on Tuesday that it had unsealed the 10 warehouses sealed last week for alleged hoarding of foodstuffs. The chairman of the commission, Muhyi Magaji, told The PUNCH in a telephone interview that the owners of the warehouses had shown up and they were directed to open and sell to the public. Magaji said, as a result, Kano had begun to witness a drop in the prices of foodstuffs. He said, “The action taken by the commission has forced the dealers to bring the commodities to markets as well as reduce their prices. We visited a number of markets, including Dawanau International Grains Market, Singer Market and Kwari Market, among others. “If you go to Shuwari market in Jigawa and Faskari and other markets in the neighboring states, you will see that the prices of grains have reduced compared to before. “If you recall, during the operation, the owners of such warehouses were nowhere to be found but those opened were stacked full of commodities, including spaghetti, rice,  sugar and other food items. The owners were issued a notice to report to the commission preparatory to facing charges before the court of law for their illegal activities.” According to Muhuyi, the operation made a significant impact towards checking the increase in the prices of grains and other essential commodities in the state. He dismissed the claim by the Management of Dawanau International Grains Market that they were not hoarding foodstuff in order to create artificial scarcity.
